Let’s first take a look at the result:

What you need:

Shoes! I recommend simple shoes, so the feathers can be the highlight.

Feathers in different lenghts! I took marabou feathers, they’re pretty and soft

Something „bling“! Tip: Don’t take something too big, I bought some hairpins with a rhinestone attachment, I could easily remove

Felt in the color of your feathers

Hot glue gun

Here’s my „bling“.

So that’s 10 grams (0.35 oz.) of feathers. You don’t need all of them. I took approx. 20 - 25 feathers for one shoe. Search for the prettiest and sort them – you’ll need long, medium and short feathers.

Cut out a felt triangle.It’ll be later attached to the shoe like in the pic below. The numbers are important for the next steps.

Start with felt side #1. Take the longer feathers and hot glue them to felt side #1. Pay attention to how the feathers are bend – see pic.

Now you proceed to felt side #2 and attach the feathers semicircular – now the feather you take have a medium length.

Here’s an illustration how to proceed further. After the first row of feathers (purple) you put a second row on the first (pink).

After this you should see no felt any more. Please pay attention: For the second shoe everything has to be the on the opposite side!!

Now you might want to put something on the spot where the feathers of the second row meet to hide it. Just hot glue it on that spot.

You can also use the feather piece as a fascinator if you just attach a pin!

The last step is to hot glue the felt triangles to the shoes!

I am so in love with my now super fancy shoes. They look like they did cost hundreds of bucks! But wait – how much did I pay?

Shoes (real leather) in the perfect color: 29€

Feathers: 2.75€ for a pack of 110 pieces (10 grams = 0.35 oz.)

2 Hairpins for 3.99€

Felt: 0.20€

That’s 36€!!!!

**CROSS POSTED FROM DIY BOARDS PER MRS. BEE'S SUGGESTION, ENJOY!!**

Anyone who can thread a needle and simple-sew can make their own hair flower. I used:

Fake flowers of choice from craft store

White thread

Pins

Pearl-looking beads from craft store

Alligator barrette

TIP: When you go to the craft store for your supplies, look for fake flowers that can be easily pulled apart. Most fake flowers are made with a plastic center and fabric flower petals stacked and then backed by another hard green plastic piece. I would recommend looking for fake peonies, rannucluses or other large fluffy looking flowers. I would not recommend using fake roses, mostly because the fake petals are so tightly packed, you may not be able to get the soft look that is very IN right now.

Start with popping the flower heads off the stems:

Then, pull apart the flowers themselves so you have loose fabric petals.

Play around with the petals, stacking them into a shape you want. You can use less or more depending on how full or fluffy you want the flower, or you can use less of the larger outer petals depending on how large or small you want your flower.

Once you have a stack that looks good to you, pin the layers together so the stack stays together the way you like it.

Once you have the layers stacked, starting from the underside of the flower, start sewing a simple stich in the center to get the pieces to hold together. After about 5-8 pass-throughs, get out your pearl beads.

In order to speed things up, I added the beads in while I was sewing the flower together itself. After a few pass-throughs, I started to add beads on my needle while I was sewing. At first, I added one large bead per pass, and then I started to add on other smaller beads, several at a time, onto the thread before making my next pass through. In this way, you'll get a cluster look to the center of your flower.

You'll want to make sure you pull the thread tight each time, otherwise, the beads will end up loose on top of the flower. Continue to pass-through, adding beads each time until you get the size bead cluster you want.

Once the top of your flower looks good to you, you'll want to start to sew on your alligator barrette. Again, starting from the back side of the flower, simple sew each outer edge of the barrette to the back of the flower. You will end up stitching through the bead cluster on top, but don't worry, there will be enough room to get through the beads and the beads will hide most of your stitches underneath them. When you pull your thread through the top of the flower, try to sew back between the same beads you came through, thus making your stitch go back under the beads.

I probably sewed each side of my barrette about 20-30 times before I felt comfortable that the barrette was going to stay in place. I will advised though that over time the metal edges of the alligator barrette will wear on the stitching, so don't play with the flower more than you have to. Or, my other suggestion would be to wrap the edges of the barrette you plan to sew in a very small amount of clear tape in order to "coat" the edges of the barrette and help prevent some of the wear and tear on your work.

Otherwise, you're done! Admire your handi-work, you crafty bride, you!

kmattso2 on "Satin and Organza Hair Flower"

After my first version was a flop, I decided on going another route.

Directions

1. Cut out five petal shapes for the base layer out of white satin.

2. Thread a simple running stitch through the bottom of each petal.

3. Gather the ends tight and tie it in a knot to give the petal some pucker.

4. Hold each petal over a flame to seal the edges and let them shrink a little. Unfortunately for me I didn't have a candle so I was using a lighter. I couldn't take a picture for you because I was too busy burning my fingers. But just make sure you don't hold it too close so that the fabric burns.

5. Arrange all five petals in a circular shape and sew them together in the center.

6. Cut out five petal shapes from organza, a little bit smaller than the satin ones. For these I didn't do the gathering at the bottom, I just held them to the flame to get some shape.

7. Arrange the organza petals into a circular shape and sew them together in the middle.

8. Place the organza flower over the satin base layer and sew them in place.

9. Repeat this same process with another layer of satin, slightly smaller, and a smaller layer of organza over that. I also added three additional petals under the base of it to fill it out a little more.

10. For the center of the flower, I cut a long skinny strip of satin and burned the edges of it to give it shape. Then I rolled it until I was happy with the way it looked and sewed it together. I sewed a few small petals around the outside of it, and then sewed it to the flower.

11. There are a few petals of netting at the base of the flower, and I may consider adding a couple more so you can see it better.

12. Attach to your choice of clip or comb, and enjoy!

I paid just under $1.50 for the material for this flower. I purchased 1/8 yard of both white satin and white organza. The tulle netting I had left from the first go around.

Earlier this week I posted about my new ’second first wedding’ dress. I wasn’t sure if I should wait to wear my veil for the October wedding or if I should wear it to both. A few readers suggested I wear a hair flower. What a great idea! Why didn’t I think of that?I would have loved to order one from Etsy, there are so many cute options, but time is against me. So, I decided to try and make one myself. I headed to Michael’s not really knowing what I was doing, armed with a short shopping list:

Silk Flower Feathers Barrettes

Here is a close-up of the peony I picked out:

I then took apart the peony (like Miss Shortcake taught me) and this is what I was left with:

I chose some of the smaller petals and glued them together. Then I added a couple feathers and a pearl I had left over from another project. Finally, I hot glued the flower to a barrette. Here is the final product:

It took me all of five minutes and I am pleasantly surprised with the results.

Here is the cost breakdown: Peony: $2 (50% off) Barrettes: $1.50 (50% off) Feathers: $1.50 Total: $5

For my bacelorette party, I made all my girls fascinators to wear out. I took a few white petals apart from a bunch of flowers and sewed them together with a pearl or crystal center and a strip of Russian tulle. Then I hot glued a hair clip to the underneath. We had fun wearing them!

A couple of years ago a friend brought me a flower hair clip from Hawaii. It quickly became my favorite hair accessory. I am sad to say that it is looking a little dingy these days from being wore so much. It was clear as day to me what my head would be adorn with on my wedding day. A flower clip (or fascinator as i learned these are called in the wedding world) and a birdcage veil. I checked out my best friend ETSY, and I also started to think about making my own fascinator. When I started to plan our engagement photos, I started to think about doing a practice run on the fascinator. With my 1950’s party dress, a yellow flower sounded perfect.

Using the trusty Weddingbee boards as a resource, I did a quick scan of how to make a hair fascinator. Mrs Pineapple’s tutorial and this engageology tutorial (which gave me confidence to hold perfectly good fabric above an open flame!) helped give me the info I needed to design and create my own.

I used a fair number of supplies that I already had at my house:

white ribbon to attach the alligator clip

alligator clip

needle and thread

hot glue gun

matches and a candle

fray checkMr Knit and I made a quick trip to JoAnn’s Fabic- after a unsuccessful hunt for a the most recent JoAnn’s fabric coupon- BOOOO i missed a big opportunity to save $$- oh well- it was an inexpensive project none-the-less. At JoAnn’s I picked up

1/4 yard yellow tulle

1/4 yard yellow bubble organza

1 yellow fabric flower

1 yellow flower buttonI cut the tulle into 7 petals (almost a kidney shape- two petals) with rounded ends, and 5 longer pointed end petals. I arranged the 5 pointed end petals into a star shape and placed a 2 inch piece of ribbon on top. Using a rubber band to secure the alligator clip in the open position I sewed the alligator clip to the ribbon and the star shaped tulle. Once secure, I trimmed the ribbon and applied fray check. In hindsight I would use felt in the future.Attaching the hair clip to the star of tulle which will be the base of your fascinator
Next, I used thread to cinch the middle of each of the tulle petals with the rounded ends.Cinching the tulle petals

Arrange the tulle petals into a flower and sew together with thread. Next, take the fabric petals (in this case bubble organza) and hold carefully over an open flame. It is an art to make sure the edges melt, but not too much. Check out the before and after photos of these petals. Notice how the top image cups like a petal and the bottom image lays flat. Also notice the difference in size- the petals will shrink so cut accordingly.Before: bottom petal- After: top petal

Similarly to the tulle petals- tie the organza or other fabric petals in the center with thread.Tie off in the center to cinch

Arrange the petals into a flower and sew together in the center.Sew into a flower shape

Like Mrs Pineapple’s tutorial, I disassembled my purchased flower- sorry I disassembled it in the car on the way home because i was so excited for this project- so I have no before picture. I only used two of the three petal pieces to make a solid base for my tulle and my organza.clockwise from the top: tulle flower, pointed Tulle base, organza flower, purchased flower pieces

Assemble the pieces in this order, securing with stitches as you go: Pointed Tulle base, purchased flower pieces, tulle flower, organza flower, button. Tie off and enjoy!Not bad!

After checking out some of the world's cutest hair fascinators (that I couldn't afford) at Lord & Taylor, I decided to try my hand at my own.

It was very simple to layer various feathers and flower elements, and I found great netting on etsy to make a short veil for my face. I plan to wear this to my rehearsal, since I'm doing a traditional veil for my wedding!

For more information on how I made it, feel free to check out my blog entry describing the process

My family wanted some projects so we got together and made hair fascinators for all the dresses.

This is the funky one my sister and I worked on for my reception dress.

For the Chinese brides who wear red and gold, this is the one I made for my tea ceremony.

Ed. note: We’ve attached the finished product to the end of the post!

~~~
I had been considering wearing silk flower in my hair for a few months before I found the photo that convinced me I had to have one.
Photo by Luke Walker.
Doesn’t that flower it look beautiful in her hair? I love it!
Sidenote: This picture also sold me on the idea of taking a picture in a boat, but I’d be nervous about falling into the water! I actually think they are trying to trick us in this picture. Doesn’t it look like the boat is on the dock? I guess that’s how you do it without getting wet… this couple is smart!
Anyways, after I saw this picture, I began shopping for hair flower materials. I picked up some apparel lining fabric (I think it’s just polyester) for a few other projects, but had a bunch of scraps left over. Since the fabric matched my dress, I used the remaining fabric to make the my hair flowers. Here are instructions in case you want to make one yourself. They are really easy to make!
You will need:
Fabric — lightweight fabric like silk or chiffon will work best. I just used some apparel lining fabric in ivory to match my dress. You can use scraps from another project, as this doesn’t take much!
Scissors or rotary cutter
Self-healing mat if you’re using a rotary cutter
Needle and matching thread
Instructions:
1. Cut a flower out of your fabric with scissors or a rotary cutter. You can trace a pattern on first if you prefer. I just did it freehand. Sorry for the wrinkles in this flower, this was one of my rejects.
2. Continue to cut flowers, making each one slightly smaller than the last. I used about 10 flowers for each hairpiece I made.
3. Stack flowers center to center from biggest to smallest, alternating the locations of the petals to avoid gaps.
4. Carefully lift all of the flowers at once and fold them in half.
5. Place needle in the center of the folded side, making sure that needle goes through all layers of the flower. Make a few stitches to keep the flowers together.
6. Turn flower around and pinch in the opposite direction to make flower round. Arrange petals how you would like them.
7. Make a few more stitches to keep petals in place and tie a knot in the thread. Your flower is finished!
8. Attach flower to hair clip, pin, headband, or anywhere else you want!
If you have any questions on this tutorial I’d be happy to answer them. Enjoy your pretty new flower!
