<p>Do you want to know how Sister Coconut and I are spending our Friday nights? Oh yes that&rsquo;s right, crafting baby! Here are the initials that you might remember we used for <a href="http://www.weddingbee.com/2008/06/26/sister-coconuts-oot-bags-pootiekins-initials/">Sister Coconut&rsquo;s wedding</a> back in July. They are back for more wedding action!</p>
<p>For our wedding, I bought some really orange-ish/yellow/ivory flowers at Jo-Ann&rsquo;s Fabrics and Crafts. The labor was more intensive because the petals varied in size, so Sister Coconut had to twist and turn them with her handy dandy glue gun, but it looks spectacular, don&rsquo;t you think?</p>
<p>Here&rsquo;s my sister, hard at work. I was Goccoing my friend Kate&rsquo;s wedding programs. I&rsquo;ll post about them later. She&rsquo;s getting married this weekend in Michigan!</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/29/img-32303.jpg" /></p>
<p><span></span> <img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/29/img-32401.jpg" /></p>
<p>She&rsquo;s so cute, isn&rsquo;t she?</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/29/img-32402.jpg" /></p>
<p>Do you wanna know what the guys did the whole time? They played Call of Duty.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/29/img-32403.jpg" /></p>
<p>Here&rsquo;s part of the M.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/29/img-32501.jpg" /></p>
<p>Sister Coconut finished the M, and here is almost done with the L. Can you see the old bits? We just tore them off. Super easy!</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/29/img-33402.jpg" /></p>
<p>I bought some brown and ivory striped grosgrain ribbon to attach to the letters. It&rsquo;s going to look super preppy and cute! I bought the ribbon from <a href="http://stores.ebay.com/EA-Ribbon-Bows-and-Crafts">eBay</a>.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/29/img-33403.jpg" /></p>
<p>They are definitely a process, but I feel that it&rsquo;s totally worth it in the end!</p>

<p>One of the first projects I decided I wanted to take on for the wedding was some initials to hang on the doors of the church. They are just so pretty!</p>
<p>Here are my initial inspiration pictures&hellip;</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/26/jennife.jpg" /> <a href="http://www.jenbrumphotography.com/"></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.jenbrumphotography.com/">Jennifer Brum </a></p>
<p><span></span> <img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/26/aprils.jpg" /></p>
<p><a href="http://aprilsmithphotography.com/">April Smith</a> via <a href="http://www.stylemepretty.com/">Style Me Pretty</a>Here&rsquo;s what you&rsquo;ll need to make your own mossy initials.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/26/initial.jpg" /></p>
<ul>
<p></p>
<li>A large piece of Styrofoam insulation (the pink stuff works just fine!), but cardboard letters would also work. We used 1/2&Prime; thick insulation and doubled up the layers for strength.</li>
<p></p>
<li>Box cutter</li>
<p></p>
<li>Sharpie</li>
<p></p>
<li>Spray adhesive</li>
<p></p>
<li>Sandpaper</li>
<p></p>
<li>Spray paint (I used a light green color)</li>
<p></p>
<li>Spanish moss</li>
</ul>
<p>Instructions:</p>
<p>1. Draw the letters onto your Styrofoam with a permanent marker.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/26/initial01.jpg" /></p>
<p>2. Carefully cut the letters out with a box cutter.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/26/initial02.jpg" /></p>
<p>3. If your Styrofoam is thin like ours, trace the letter you just cut out onto more Styrofoam. This will be your second layer to strengthen the letters.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/26/initial03.jpg" /></p>
<p>4. Carefully cut out your second letter with a box cutter.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/26/initial04.jpg" /></p>
<p>5. Now you have your two layers!</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/26/initial05.jpg" /></p>
<p>6. Apply spray adhesive to the front side of the bottom layer and to the back side of the other top layer.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/26/initial06.jpg" /></p>
<p>7. Match the edges and carefully press the two layers together. Now you will have one letter with double the thickness.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/26/initial07.jpg" /></p>
<p>8. Use sandpaper to smooth the edges of the letter. Sand, sand, sand, until all edges are complete.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/26/initial08.jpg" /></p>
<p>9. If you are using insulation, remove the plastic covering from the top and bottom of the letter. This is an important step! If you forget to do this, the paint and glue in the next steps might rub off.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/26/initial09.jpg" /></p>
<p>10. Spray the top, bottom, and all edges of the letter with spray paint. Be careful not to spray too close, or the paint will eat away at the Styrofoam.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/26/initial010.jpg" /></p>
<p>11. Wait for the paint to dry!</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/26/initial011.jpg" /></p>
<p>12. When the paint is dry, apply spray adhesive to the top and all edges of the letter.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/26/initial012.jpg" /></p>
<p>13. Spread the Spanish moss over the letter to cover it.</p>
<p> <img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/26/initial013.jpg" /></p>
<p>To help the moss stick, squeeze it around the edges of the letter.</p>
<p> <img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/26/initial014.jpg" /></p>
<p>14. Admire your pretty initials! Depending on how you plan on hanging them, you will have to add a ribbon, mounting tape, etc. to the back of the letter. We&rsquo;re going to add some plum double-faced satin ribbon to the tops of ours (similar to the first inspiration photo), but I haven&rsquo;t ordered the ribbon yet.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/26/initial015.jpg" /></p>
<p>Hope you enjoyed the tutorial!</p>

RoddyBride09 on "RoddyBride's DIY 'R'"

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The 'R' is going to be one large letter 'R' that will be placed on the cake table. It will be decoupaged with color photos of Mr. Roddy and I through the years. It will be a cool compliment to the funky cake that we have designed. This craft has not been completed but we are hoping it is as easy as it looks...</p>
<p>Supplies:</p>
<ul>
<p></p>
<li>Big cardboard letter ( I found mine at JoAnn Fabrics)</li>
<p></p>
<li>Spraypaint - this is the base color (Optional)</li>
<p></p>
<li>Mod Podge brand glue for decopauging</li>
<p></p>
<li>Foam paint brush</li>
<p></p>
<li>Favorite Photos</li>
<p></p>
<li>Paper Cutter or Scissors to cut the photos</li>
<p></p>
<li>Ribbon for sides (optional)</li>
<p></p>
<li>Tacky Glue (for glueing ribbon)</li>
<p>
</ul>
<p><a href="http://s133.photobucket.com/albums/q76/elanatheone/?action=view&amp;current=DSC01977.jpg"><img src="http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q76/elanatheone/DSC01977.jpg" alt="Photobucket" /></a></p>
<p>Step 1: Spraypaint the letter. Let the letter dry completely. You will need very good ventilation for this. Be sure to wear protective gear such as gloves, goggles, and a mask.</p>
<p><a href="http://s133.photobucket.com/albums/q76/elanatheone/?action=view&amp;current=DSC01980.jpg"><img src="http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q76/elanatheone/DSC01980.jpg" alt="Photobucket" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://s133.photobucket.com/albums/q76/elanatheone/?action=view&amp;current=DSC02077.jpg"><img src="http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q76/elanatheone/DSC02077.jpg" alt="Photobucket" /></a><br />Step 2: Pick your favorite photos and cut them to the shape of the letter so no picture hangs off the letter. Do this until the letter is fully covered. You have a few choices here. Only cover one side of the letter with pictures or collage pictures all around the letter. You can even overlap pictures if you wish for a different style. For this project I only covered the front with pictures.</p>
<p><a href="http://s133.photobucket.com/albums/q76/elanatheone/?action=view&amp;current=DSC02285.jpg"><img src="http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q76/elanatheone/DSC02285.jpg" alt="Photobucket" /></a></p>
<p>Step 3: Using the Mod Podge and foam paint brush, apply a thin layer of the glue to where the picture will lie. Then apply another thin layer to the back of the photo and then place the photo on the designated spot.</p>
<p>Step 4: This step is optional. With the Tacky Glue, glue a ribbon (the width of the letter side) to the outsides of the letter. Be sure to smooth out the ribbon with your fingers to prevent bubbling of the fabric.</p>
<p><a href="http://s133.photobucket.com/albums/q76/elanatheone/?action=view&amp;current=DSC02300.jpg"><img src="http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q76/elanatheone/DSC02300.jpg" alt="Photobucket" /></a></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Step 5: Admire your work =)</p>
<p><a href="http://s133.photobucket.com/albums/q76/elanatheone/?action=view&amp;current=DSC02305.jpg"><img src="http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q76/elanatheone/DSC02305.jpg" alt="Photobucket" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://s133.photobucket.com/albums/q76/elanatheone/?action=view&amp;current=DSC02301.jpg"><img src="http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q76/elanatheone/DSC02301.jpg" alt="Photobucket" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://s133.photobucket.com/albums/q76/elanatheone/?action=view&amp;current=DSC02303.jpg"><img src="http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q76/elanatheone/DSC02303.jpg" alt="Photobucket" /></a></p>

<p>The ever so popular flowered letters!</p>
<p>I&rsquo;m not sure where I first saw them, but I knew these letters were something I definitely wanted to DIY. So when I was home a few months ago, I ventured to a discount home and garden store where I bought lots of discounted fake flowers, and to Jo-Ann&rsquo;s where I purchased our letters: J &amp; R.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/19/z166813.jpg" alt="z166813" title="IMG_2924" /></p>
<p>I searched high and low for peach colored flowers&mdash;but there weren&rsquo;t any I liked! Then&hellip; lightbulb! Buy white and pink flowers and MIX THEM! Overall the effect was better than the peach I was looking for. <img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif" alt=")" /></p>
<p><span></span> <img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/19/z166814.jpg" alt="z166814" title="IMG_2934" /></p>
<p>I pulled out all the flowers from the stems and removed those round green things you see on the bottom of each flower</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/19/z16681301.jpg" alt="z16681301" title="IMG_2927" /></p>
<p>Then punched holes in the letters with&hellip;</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/19/z16681401.jpg" alt="z16681401" title="IMG_2925" /></p>
<p>this random sharp metal tool I found in my dad&rsquo;s toolbox. I stapled parts of the flowers not only to secure them, but to also place&nbsp; them where I wanted them to go.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/19/z16681402.jpg" alt="z16681402" title="IMG_2930" /></p>
<p>I inserted each flower like this, and proceeded with the stapling</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/19/z16681403.jpg" alt="z16681403" title="IMG_2935" /></p>
<p>Here I was slowly coming along. I planned to paint the back and sides of the letters white before I started with the flowers, but I couldn&rsquo;t wait to attach the flowers. <img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif" alt=")" /> The painting can come later.</p>

<p><div>So I mentioned things got a little crazy before my trip to Colorado. Suddenly I realized that this was the only opportunity I would have to get things out to Vail without having to ship them. I quickly thought of any last minute DIY projects I could squeeze into my schedule before my flight. I thought about our church doors and how pretty dark red letters would look in the snow. So like many bees, I ordered wood letters from (16&Prime;, Times New Roman, 1/4 thick) <a href="http://www.craftcuts.com/">Craft Cuts </a>. This size is large enough to make a statement but won&rsquo;t completely take over the church doors.<img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/23/012.jpg" /></div></p>
<p><span></span>I used rather large blooms for the silk flowers so I painted our initials the same color as the flowers to keep the color throughout the entire letter. One tube of <a href="http://www.plaidonline.com/apFA.asp#FA">FolkArt Acrylic paint</a> (from AC Moore) worked great, and for a few bucks it made a big difference.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/23/013.jpg" /></p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/23/016.jpg" /></p>
<p>If there&rsquo;s one tip I could recommend, I would say that it&rsquo;s much easier to push down on the hot glue if there is fabric between your finger and the glue. I cut some of the flowers into small pieces and wrapped those around the base of the flowers I glued to the letter. This way, I prevented burns and avoided any green stems from showing.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/23/015.jpg" /></p>
<p>I&rsquo;m still trying to figure out a way to hang the &ldquo;K&rdquo;, but you get the general idea. For about 30 bucks ($25 for the letters, $2 for paint, and $3 for a cheapo mini glue gun and glue sticks), I think it&rsquo;ll add a nice pop of color in the midst of what I hope is a snowy night!</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/23/018.jpg" /></p>
<p>I managed to drop by our church for one last look before the big day. Here&rsquo;s where our initials will hang. Now if I could only figure out a way to cover up that ugly sign on the stairs!</p>
<p><img src="http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/23/040.jpg" /></p>
<p>Honestly, this will be one of the only &ldquo;decorations&rdquo; at our church for the ceremony. Do you have any other cheap ways to add some simple decor to your ceremony location?</p>
