Materials:

30 inch strip of fabric you like

Spools of Laces (you can find these cheap!)

Ribbon - whatever colors you need or styles

Elastic band - about 1/3 yard to be safe

Sculpy Clay - to make your charm (whatever it may be)

Sewing machine / Hand needle / Thread to match ribbon

Step 1 - Cutting Fabric

Take your elastic band and put it around your thigh to measure how wide your thigh is - then cut your elastic about 2-3 inches shorter than that, depending on how stretchy your elastic is. You don't want it to fall off or cut off circulation.

I used a rotary cutter and mat from my quilting supplies, you can use scissors and your eye if that is what you have at home. For my smaller garter, I had elastic that was about an inch thick. I made sure to make my strip of fabric 3" and about 25" long. Iron your fabric ahead of time and be careful if your fabric likes to strech and move like mine did.

Step 2 - Set up the Lacies

Since my lace was on a spool, it needed to be ironed on low to make it not curl up into a ball. Since I was using two layers of lace, I pre-stitched these together to make my life easier when I stitched it to the actual fabric. Make sure you stitch very close to the top edge, so when you finish it with the fabric your safety stitches will not show through at all.

Step 3 - Sew lace to fabric

With your pretty side up, line up the edge of the lace to the edge of the fabric. You will need to think a little counter-intuitively now and flip the left edge over to line up with the right edge. Go ahead and pin if you like for security (although I never pin stuff. Maybe that is why my stuff always looks like butt). You are going to sew down the right side and stitch it like a sandwich: fabric right side down, lace, fabric right side up. I kept my needle at 1/4" seam so that I wouldn't hinder the pretty lace, but I would be sure to cover up my safety stitches. No need to keep this perfect, just make sure that you don't have any gaps in your stitching. I also left a little bit of an edge of fabric at the top and bottom without lace - you'll see why later.

Step 4 - Do the worm!

There is no easy way to do this - you now have to turn your inside out garter right side out. Grab for some of that lace and keep turning it right side out, shimmying the good side down the inside out part until you are halfway done. After that it gets easier. Fluff when you are done and iron if you feel like you need to iron again.

Step 5 - Thread the elastic band

Take your hand sewing needle and lace up some heavy small stuff on one end. I put four pony beads on one end of a 30" piece of thread. The other side I stuck through my elastic band end. Now drop the weighted side down into your garter and wiggle it until it comes out the other side. Now all you have to do is pull the thread to get your elastic band to go through the garter.

STOP! Do not let the whole thing get swallowed up by the garter! You still have to sew the ends together on the elastic....

Step 6 - Sew Elastic and hand sew garter fabric

Sew the elastic together. I used stretch stitching and did a few rows of stitching - you don't want that bad boy to snap and break on the wedding day toss.

Thread your hand sewing needle with a color thread that matches your garter fabric. Now comes the part where leaving a little fabric edge without lace is handy - see how those edges look frayed and ugly? You flip them inside and then stitch the fabric together. Smooooooooth edges. And if you have a little fabric longer than your lace, then after you tuck in the rough edges the lace parts should line right up and look fairly seamless.

Step 7 - Bake your charms!

I didn't get a picture of this part of the process, but working with sculpy clay is just like working with clay from when you were a kid. Knead the clay until it is soft, and work it into whatever shape you want. Do know that it will dry exactly like you have it - so if you left fingerprints it will show, if an edge is not perfect it will also show. This was also much cheaper than buying a silver comm badge charm for $35 on the internet. So I was ok with this. Bake your charm at 275 about 15 minutes for each .25 inch of thickness. Don't over bake- it can burn to a crisp.

Step 8 - Attach ribbons and charms

I took my hand sewing needle and sewed on the black ribbon and then sewed on the charm. Done! I also made a keeper garter that still needs to have a little work done on it - Mr. SB didn't quite buy enough elastic so I have to cut it open again and add more so my leg doesn't fall off. I also have to attach the comm badge to the larger keeper garter. On the keeper garter I attached lace to both sides, and then sequin in the middle. For that one I used two separate pieces of fabric and sewed two seams.

The last thing I wanted to do was pay 30 dollars for a garter, especially if I was going to end up tossing it behind my back to a group of intoxicated men who would probably end up wearing it as a headband before losing it some time in between taking a shot and stumbling to the bathroom. I found a garter at Walmart for just a few bucks, so I decided to take the plunge and get one. But when I got home and opened it up, this is what it looked like:

The lace was hideous! Even if I wasn’t going to wear a garter during the ceremony and just needed one to throw during the garter toss, I didn’t like this one at all. So I tried to salvage it and take a pair of scissors to it. A few minutes later, I ended up with this:

I cut the lace and the horrid bow off, and attached my own bows using cute white ribbon and a couple of glue dots. Not bad for four bucks and 10 minutes of my time!

One of my first wedding-related purchases was my garter. I bought a cute black and white set from Sheer Satin and Lace on eBay.

Here is the tossing garter. Look closely and you can see the double heart charm.

I liked the double hearts, but I thought the guys would like something a little more… Nintendo. So, I bought two charms from TheClayCollection on Etsy in the shape of NES games. For the toss garter, I got Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt, and, for the keepsake garter, I got the original Final Fantasy. (I also ordered a little something special for Mr. Fondue, but more on that later.)

The decorations on the garter were attached with hot glue, so, to switch out the charms, I simply heated them up briefly with my embossing heat gun. It just took a couple seconds of blasting it for the glue to melt.

The keepsake garter disassembled.

You can see in the above picture how the charm was just on a little piece of ribbon. I used the same ribbon and threaded it through a needle to place the new charm on it.

Ready to be glued.

Then I simply hot glued everything back together.

Voila! Two gaming garters!

Miss. Hibiscus’ entry about sports garters made me think about mine. While we probably won’t have a garter toss, a sports garter seems like a nice surprise for Mr. Peach after the wedding is over. I went to the website and found the Michigan one:

I really liked it, but I just couldn’t swallow the price ($34.95!!). So I set out to make my own! I went to A.C. Moore to purchase my materials (lace, yellow ribbon, blue ribbon, elastic) for a whopping grand total of $3.95!!

Cut two pieces of lace and both the ribbons about twice the width of your thigh. Cut the elastic so that it is a comfortable fit around your thigh.

First I sewed together two pieces of lace back to back to form one piece of lace with a centerline:

Then I sewed on one edge of the blue ribbon to the lace, where the centerline was formed, like below (so that it appears that one side of the lace will be longer than the other).

From the front view:

From the back view:

Then I added the yellow ribbon (*NOTE: I should have added the yellow ribbon to the blue ribbon BEFORE adding it to the lace. It would have been easier):

Front view:

Back view:

I got so excited I forgot to take some pictures >_< sowieee!! But it’s really simple. You sew the OTHER side of the blue ribbon to the lace and then string the elastic through. You can use a safety pin to help you guide it through. Then sew up the two ends together and viola~! Not too shabby, eh? I also saved $30! woohoo~

It lacks the sports pin, but eh, whatever. I did find the exact same Michigan football pin for $4.95 so maybe I’ll add it later.

Mr. Gloss has been traveling a lot for work, so it has given me time to complete some of the more ‘secret’ wedding projects, namely, the garter, and a potential veil. Also, I’ll be able to finish up some non-groom secret wedding things, like the flower for my hair and the bridesmaids’ jewelry. So, welcome to my Mr.Gloss-is-gone-craft-a-thon.

First up: the garter

As it seems to be with all my DIY projects, the first try is to just try and figure things out. Knowing that the first attempt will most likely not really come out the way I had anticipated, I’ve been remembering to plan ahead and purchase extra supplies. So, this is actually garter attempt round two, as the first one came out looking like a giant ivory satin scrunchie and was actually really uncomfortable to wear, even for the four minutes I was walking around the apartment with it on. I am even too embarrassed to post pictures of it since it nowhere near resembles a ‘garter’, but rather an over-the-top wedding accessory from the early ’90s. Yikes!

So back to the drawing board I went. I re-evaluated the situation and brainstormed what backfired with round one:

It was waay to large. *Now I know to measure the size of the elastic so that it is a comfortable tightness around my thigh, and to add just a smidgen to be able to sew the ends of the elastic together.

Following garter directions that ultimately said ‘You can also use this method to make hair accessories!’ *Disregarded pattern, now improving garter design.

Round one had a satin covered elastic band (like I need more bulk on my thighs!!), so in round two I opted for stretchy lace to create a smoother profile

I measured, cut, and sewed a simple circle of the stretchy elastic lace and trimmed off the excess. (Test width around thigh and tighten if required.)

Next, I made a simple grosgrain bow using the fabulous directions from Mrs. Emerald’s invites (except I sewed mine together, rather than using double-sided tape for durability purposes). The sewing machine was already out, otherwise I may have been tempted to just use hot glue.

First, I attached a cute button I found at Mood when I was in NY just to add a splash of color.

I don’t want to carry a bag around on my wedding day, so I knew I would need a place to store the ultimate accessory… my lip gloss! So, I sewed a little satin pocket and attached it to the rest of the garter. Then I sewed the bow to the garter base (the stretchy lace) in the middle and on both ends (otherwise they flopped around).

I may attach a small piece of Velcro to ensure the pocket stays closed – but that is still to be determined!
