Since my bridesmaids are ordering their dresses from an etsy seller, they will not have a hanger to hang their brand spanking new dresses on. I wanted to make something a little personal for them, so I decided to DIY dress hangers.
This was a favorly easy project and the only time consuming thing about it was waiting for the paint to dry. I started by going to Walmart and picking up a 5-pack of shirt hangers. I had some white paint laying around the house as well.
Before painting I put tape along the bottom part of the metal hook, to prevent paint from getting on it. I then applied three layers of white paint until I had the solid white color I was after. (Love my awesome drying apparatus; lamp from spare bedroom)
As they were drying I printed out all the girls name in the font I wanted. On the back of each slip of paper I traced their name in pencil. Then I placed the strip on the hanger and rubbed over the name to transfer the lead to the hanger.
After I took purple paint and painted over the lead writing. Then I took them outside and sprayed them down with a clear spray paint to protect the surfaces. And boom done, you have some nice personalized hangers for your ladies!
I love those! I have been looking at purchasing the wire-name hangers, but this is a much cheaper route and will look just as good! Thanks for the idea :)
ohh...I love this... my wedding is a beachy one.. so I if I do this, i'll just leave the hangers "natural"... my question is: will a normal piece of paper allow you to trace over the letters on the back or did you have to print the names onto some kind of special piece of paper? Also, what did you use to paint the letters once traced... a super thin paint brush? Would a paint pen work??
@Aimee_Suprenant: Any paper will work. Just flip it over and trace the name with lead then place it where you want on the hanger and rub over the name. It will transfer to the wood.
You can use either a very fine paint brush, paint pen, or in my case, I didn't have a thin enough paint brush, so I just took a pencil and dipped it in the paint and went over the letters. Hope that helps!
Thank you for the great tutorial! I actually bought those same hangers a few months ago, but I was unsure of how to do the name transfer exactly so its a project I have been putting off! I may just attempt them this weekend now! thanks!
Cool! I just found 2-packs of these hangers on clearance at JoAnn's! Guess I'll be going back to pick them up! I love this idea! I think it will make an awesome picture with all the girls' dresses hanging up together!
