This is my first DIY post so I hope you guys like it!
I got this idea from an etsy seller who had made similar magnets that were super cute, however they were out of my budget. Also, I feel awesome knowing I can tell everyone I made them myself!
I'm not done with them yet, still waiting on the little magenets I ordered to come in so I can glue them to the back, but I just couldn't wait to post them!!!
I absolutely love them and I am so proud of myself. Although I only have 20 done which took me about 3 hours (ugg) and I have a total of 100 to do.
The first one was the hardest because I had never used a woodburning pen before so I didn't really know what I was doing. At first I wrote on the heart in pencil so I could trace it with the woodburner but that ended up to difficult so after doing the first one that way I just "winged" it with the woodburner. After doing a couple like that it was easy to know exactly where to start and how big to make the letters so I didn't run out of room. The biggest tip is to go slow. The slower you move the pen the nicer the burn. If you go too fast you end up having to go over it again which just wastes time. Hopefully the next 80 or so will go much faster since I've gotten the hang of it.
Here's a look at the finished heart with the "pre-burnt" heart so you can see the difference. I burnt the edges as you can see and the little burnt "lines" were acutally an accident on one when I hit it with the pen but I liked how it made it look more like birch tree bark so I went with it!
Here's my supply list and where you can get everything:
Wood Hearts: craftparts.com 125, 4 1/2" country hearts (I ordered extra to have some I could mess up on) $38.75 + nominal shipping (I also ordered some rectangular wood pieces from here so make my table numbers with the woodburner as well)
Wood Burning Pen: Amazon.com $20.00 (you can also get one at Michaels)
Magnets: 100 3/4" round magnets from eBay seller "hooties-bargains": $10.00
E6000 glue to glue on magnents (recommended by eBay seller): Walmart $5.00
Total to make 100 Heart Magnents: $73.75 (To buy 100 it would have been $350 on etsy!!!)
I have also ordered Wood Grain paper from lcipaper.com which we are using to print our own "Guest Information" enclosure to be sent with them and I also ordered clear vellum envelopes from the same site to mail them in. Total for the paper and envelopes was $50 but the paper was only in packs of 50 sheets of 11x17 and we can get 6 enclosure cards on one sheet so we'll have a lot left over and we're using the same paper to print our invitations to go in our pocketfolds (that will be another huge project!) I think the wood heart showing out the back of the clear envelope will look super cute when my guests get it in the mail :)
I haven't figured how much postage will be, probably a little extra but i think it's worth it!!
Thank you SO much for posting this! I found the same save the date magnets from etsy and there was no way I was paying almost $4.00 a magnet! I get kind of upset when people post things for DYI and they don't show you or tell you how to do it, they just want to sell it to you...so A BIG THANK YOU! And they look awesome! You must be doing an outdoor theme of some sort?

another question, this may sound dumb...but is guest information just info on your venue? every time I got a save the date it was just the magnet, never anything with it. But I think that is a good idea. I am looking at the wood grain paper and the envelopes and I am kind of confused on the clear envelopes- It must just be clear in the back?
Thank you!! I'm glad you like them! Yes, we're doing a tree/earthy theme. For the info cards I'm including the hotel information since we have a lot of out of town guests who need to make reservations in advance, especially b/c our wedding is memorial day weekend and our venue is a lodge on a lake so their rooms book up fast for holiday weekends. Since my magnet doesn't have the city and state (like the normal business card type magnets have) the enclosure will also serve to simply let guests know what city the wedding is in (even for more local guests who don't need a hotel). I'll probably also put a line saying "Invitation to Follow" since that won't be on the magnet like it usually is on the normal ones.
For the clear envelopes...(hopefully this make sense) The envelopes are all clear. Not like totally see through, but more of a "misty" look (for lack of a better word). Showing through the front of the envelope (the addressed side) will be just the back of the woodgrain paper. Then I'll put the magnet behind (or actually in front of it, however you're looking at it) that paper so that it is showing through the back side of the envelope. I think it'll look cute when the guests get them b/c they can see what they are opening. Does that make sense?
Actually, I just had a thought. Depending on how clear the envelopes are when I get them, maybe I'll print the addresses on the back of each enclosure card so that shows through for the address and I don't have to write it on the envelope. What do you think about that? I'll get the envelopes Thursday (according to UPS) so I'll let you know what they are like and take a pic of what the magnet looks like in them.
Yes I see what you are saying it makes sense! I will have to write info like that too since I have people coming from out of state as well. That sounds so pretty with a lodge on a lake!! Unfortunately to get any kind of venue like that in NH it's big $$$$!! However, we are getting married at a nice Italian restaurant and their reception hall is gorgeous with big picture windows, lots of brick ( it's in a mill building ) and exposed posts in the room so we are trying to make it as earthy as possible. And when you say you can get 6 enclosure cards on one sheet-I am assuming you are doing this by yourself maybe in Microsoft word and just cutting them?
I went to Michaels today and the most expensive burning pen was $16.99-any particular reason you chose Amazon? Its looks complicated to use but I am going to give a whirl!!
I love the idea of your venue! If I couldn't get a spot on the lake I wanted it in a warehouse type space. We were really lucky to get the venue we have. It's a resort lodge owned by the state of Kentucky (Lake Barkley State Resort Park) so I guess it was cheaper than a privately owned place. We only had to pay $200 (!!!) for the rental from 8am-midnight so we reserved it for the day before too so we don't have to set up the day of the wedding. I can't belive it was that cheap, we were really lucky but it's probably because it's wayyy out in the country.
Speaking of the country, I ordered my burner from Amazon because we are about 45 mins from the nearest Michaels and I didn't fell like taking the trip. We specifically got an Amazon Prime membership because you pay like $70 for the year and get free 2 day shipping on anything you order. It works well for us because we get EVERYTHING from Amazon. Besides, I didn't need it THAT DAY because I had to wait for the wood hearts to be shipped to me as well.
For the enclosure cards we are printing them ourselves at home. My FH is a web and graphic designer so he is awesome with photoshop and we already have a nice paper cutter. We ordered the 11x17" wood grain paper so we can get 6 cards per sheet (4 1/4 x 5 1/2" each) and that size will fit perfectly into those A2 envelopes (4 3/8 x 5 3/4"). You wouldn't have to use photoshop though, you could just do it in Word. You can also get a paper cutter with measurements and all on it for relatively cheap I think, maybe $20 or $30 which would pay off if you'll be printing and cutting your invites too. My advice: buy a paper cutter with an "arm" that you lower to cut the paper, not the "sliding" cutter type. Actually, here is an Amazon link to the EXACT one we have, which works awesome and is used daily in our office. You line up the paper on the built in measurements and then "slice"...woohoo perfect cut! Obviously I haven't tested it with that wood grain paper, but I see no reason why it wouldn't work just as well with it.
Trust me, woodburning isn't complicated, just time consuming. You just plug it in, wait 5 mins for it to heat up, and start writing...slowly. The first couple won't look great but then you'll get the hang of it and it'll be much easier. My burner is Walnut Hollow brand and came with 5 different points. I experimented between using the cone point or the flow point and I liked the flow point much better. It was easier, smoother, and made a bolder line for the writing.
I wanted to add, that if you do decide to get that paper cutter (or any other) make sure you only cut one sheet at a time. Sometimes it will work well with up to 5 sheets, sometimes it messes up if it's too thick. After spending money and time on special paper and printing them out, I'd hate for you to stick a bunch under there and mess them all up! :)
I forgot to tell you that I got my magnents and they work awesome with that glue. You just have to let them dry overnight and then they are very strong. They will hold a few sheets on the fridge very well! I definately recommend getting them from that eBay seller and that E6000 glue.
Thanks so much for all the good info! I will def order the hearts ( they didn't have them at Michaels) and I will make sure I get the wood burner with the flow point. I don't have a whole lot to do so I can mess up a lot ha! That is ridiculously cheap for a venue! I guess you do live in the country !! Something like that around here goes for thousands of dollars. There is a nice castle here in NH (actually 2 you can married at, one is nicer than the other) and the cheapest of the 2 has like a $8500 food minimum !! That is like my entire budget-if that! Ugh I wish we had cheap venues like that ! I hope you post pics I am very anxious to see! I'm really set on the fairy/woodsy theme! =)
Holy crap that's expensive!!! I can't imagine that! Our venue does require us to do the catering through them, but it's not that outrageous. For 100 people it'll probably cost us around $20 each for a served meal, so $2000. (of course that doesn't include alcohol or hordourves!) Good luck making your hearts. I hope you love them! Make sure you post a pic!
