pinktwilightt - we had roughly 200 cupcakes and three stands. From what I remember 60ish fit on each stand. We had our host couple refill the stands when guests started to get the cupcakes. It also depends on the size of each tier that you build. I did a mock up with empty cupcake liners to get an estimate.
I made my own cupcake stand for the three flavors of cupcakes we had at our reception out of cake boards, cake dummies, and ribbon.
They were pretty easy and far less expensive than buying stands (I needed three). Go here to see all the details about how they were constructed.
