My daughter and her fiance love Doctor Who. So I gave their owl cake topper a Doctor Who twist and made it a Doctor Hoo. If you are not familiar with Doctor Who on BBC you might not get it, but those who are I'm sure you will.
Help please! I wanted the same cake topper from Etsy! I am DIYing my wedding because we definitely don't have a lot of money to sink into it! I would greatly appreciate if you would share with me how you made this one and the materials I would need to replicate a similar one for my cake! Please PM me or email me at Sunnyredrose37@yahoo.com. Thanks so much!
@Sunnyredrose37 - I would be happy to share with you how I made this cake topper.
I used polyomer clay to make it.
I used a heart shaped board, wire and aluminum foil to make a armiture for the tree.
After you make the wire armiture and drill a hole and glue it in the board, you wrap aluminum foil around the wire to form the tree (yoou have to squeeze the foil very hard to make the tree stable). This helps keep you from having to use as much clay and helps the clay not be so thick, so it bakes better and it is lighter.
After you have this done you cover the armiture with clay,
You smooth out the clay and make details on the tree like bark and carving your initials in a heart.
I also make roots shaped like heart on the base and covered the top of base and carved designs in the clay for the "grass".
After I got it the way I wanted I baked the tree in the oven for about 30 minutes. I then painted it with craft paint. I used a dark color and then dry brushed a lighter color to make the texture show more. I used a light color to fill in details of carving on tree.
For the swing I made a slab of the clay in a size that would hang from tree limb. I texturized it like the tree, put a hole on each corner to put the rope through, baked it, and painted it like the tree.
I made egg shaped ball of aluminum foil and then covered them with brown clay to make the owls. You have to make sure to size them were they will fit on the swing. I made wings and attached them to sides. I used white clay to make a circle for their stomachs and for their eye rings. I made smaller circles in their eye colors for the eyes and put small black beads in the center. I took a needle and texturized the whole body with little lines that looked like feathers. Then bake the owls.
All thats left is to shape our bows and flowers and leaves, bake them and glue them to the tree and owls. (I used a cake decorating mold for the flowers and the leaves)
I you have any questions or don't understand any of these directions let me know. I think my daughter has some more in process pics. I will get them from her and send to you if she does.
Not to offend anyone by any means; The one created by a seller on Etsy is just as lovely, but your's....is SO beautiful! I am not familiar with Doctor Who, but it is so lovely! You did an AMAZING job, and although it must have taken lots of time to create, you should consider making cake toppers to sell! You're VERY talented! AMAZING job, and I personally think your's looks better, although they're both great! I really love the details!
Thanks for all the compliments. It did take many hours to make. If I sold them I would be torn between getiing paid for my time and not charging poor brides too much.
On Doctor Who, the new Doctor wears a bow tie, He says "I wear a bow tie now, bowties are cool"
In one episode he had on a fez and when they looked at him funny, He said "What? I wear a fez now. Fezzes are cool"
Same with the stetson.
I guess I thought there were more Dr. Who nerds out there. HAHA
Thank you soo much for this! It makes me feel a lot better about the possibility of actually getting my dream cake topper now! I'm so excited and can't wait for a craft day!
My daughter wanted the owl cake topper below from a vendor on ETSY.

It is really cute, but it cost almost $200.
I made the one below for about $50.
