it wasn't as scary as i thought it would be, but it sure was a pain in the butt because of how pouffy the material is. i used a 20 gallon plastic storage tub, added the hot water and dye per instructions on RIT dye's website, and soaked, turned, stirred, mixed around until it was the desired color purple. it still turned out a little darker than i expected, but i'm just happy i didn't ruin it. after it reached the shade i wanted, i rinsed in warm water, then cool water until the water ran clear. use a garden hose, it works so much easier. then i washed in hot water on delicate with mild color/scent free soap, rinse in cool water/delicate setting, hang to dry, (as you can see, the garagee was the only spot that worked because it dripped so much water, plus it was a nice sunny breezey day and it dryed very quickly). i can't wait to wear it.
i used a box of powder and a bottle of dye. it was probably too much for how light of a shade of purple i was trying to achieve, but it was hard to guess because their was so much fabric.
make sure to wear heavy duty rubber gloves. the water is very hot and the dye will color anything it touches, including the gloves.
i washed it in the washer after it had started drying, and no it didn't stain it at all. but if you're concerned about it staining, i would reccomend looking on RIT's website. i remember seeing something about washing with an empty tub using hot water and bleach.

it depends on what type of material the tub is made out of. if it is procelin or porous it may stain it. using a large storage tub is pretty easy. it just gets really heavy once you put the hot water in it.
I did this too... and mine looks very similiar to your post.... I love it i'm so excited to wear it under my dress... I did mine in my future mother in laws washer... It said to leave it in for 30 min....We only put it in fr 15, and it was pretty dark. It was not bad in the washer .... Probably easier than a tub. clean up and mess wise. Cause the washer does all the work. But if you have a front loader your kinda stuck into using a tub. That dye is really powerful. I only used one bottle of the liquid purple rit dye. And just followed the directions on the box.
It was actually funny,I went into davids bridal to get something on my dress fixed and the worker helping me saw my crinoline. and was like wow where did you get that?
@beautiequeen: i'm so excited to wear mine too! the dye is very potent, it turned out too dark but it's still the main color of my wedding, plus it won't be seen the whole time. i have my first fitting on wednesday and can't wait to try on the whole ensamble (minus veil because i haven't made it yet). send pics if you can!
i just dropped it off with my gown for alterations *tear* i miss it already! but i will have them take a few pics when i go for my first fitting in two weeks :)
