Mrs Vino Wine Box Centerpiece

posted 2 years ago in Centerpiece

Since Mr Vino and I got married at a winery, I thought incorporating wine elements in non-traditional ways might be fun. I should note that my sister is an artist and did all of my floral work so this DIY project may need to be practiced beforehand as we did.

So I found a website that sold unfinished wooden wine boxes (Wood and Box Supply, $6.90/box)

My sister carved our names and our theme (Oak Trees) since we were getting married underneath a huge oak tree onto each side of the wooden box with a wooden burning tool from Michaels (stinky, would do in a well ventilated room). Then a simple light wood stain was applied to seal the design in but also protect the boxes from water damage from the flowers. You could also buy a custom design iron to just simply press into the wood (spendy about 200 dollars) and there is kits available that have designs and letters etc at Michaels but she did it all free hand.

Then it was as simple as going to the San Francisco Wholesale flower market when it opened to the public (check your city and see if yours allows you to shop where florists do) and she bought white and green hydrangea and used lemon and banana leaves for filler with some other ferns and assorted greenery and arranged them the night before in wet oasis and stuck them in our fridge. The flower market is insanely cheap, total cost of ALL of our flowers was $300...I go there for all occasions now since I can get 2 dozen long stem premium roses for ...12 bucks! It's insane and a fun place to play :

Very pretty. was your name and symbol on both sides of the box? How much did each centerpiece come out to?

This is so pretty! I have to admit, when I saw "wine box centerpiece" the first thing that came to mind was a box of fanzia (which I have seen at some of the tackier weddings I've been to) Lol. I love what you did!

sorry for the extremely belated response (started to write my thesis and got completely off wedding track!)

in response to sagebride, our names were on one side and the tree (we got married in front of a big oak) was on the other side

as for cost, it definitely depends on the flowers you use

my sister used a variety of greenery: lemon leaves, leather leaves, hypericum berries, hydrangeas and somewhere in there is some lysanthianthus because they ran out of ranunculas

we went to the public flower market (it opens up for the last few hours every morning to the public to clear inventory) in San Francisco; all I know is that my sister did 10 centerpieces, 4 bridesmaid bouquets and my bouquet for under $300 bucks, and since each bunch of hydrangea was about 6 bucks I would say each centerpiece cost approx. 15 bucks each

(I should also mention she's a graphic artist and works part time at a floral shop for fun so she had lots and lots of practice/I've never hand tied anything!!)

Hope that helps :)

Do you still have the link to the website you ordered the wine boxes from?  I've been looking for unfinished wine boxes and yours fits the bill (and budget!) perfectly.

Hey all--thank you so much for your kind compliments! :) :)

--just went to wood and box supply and apparently their website is temporarily closed??  :(

here are some other suppliers i found/in similar price range and at michaels/craft stores they also sell wood burning stamps (a little more money but could be a lifesaver for time and learning how to wood burn)
