in the begining i really wanted to wear my mothers mantilla veil that she hand made for her wedding 30 years ago. it turned out to be the wrong color/shade of ivory, so i decided to make mine.
i started with 54" wide bridal tulle from joann. it has clear dots all over it to give it the look of rhinestones. the clear dots show up better in professional pics rather than the rhinestones which can show up as black spots. anyway, i had them cut 2 yards, then used the length as the width to gather at the top and sew onto the comb. make sense? the wider the fabric, the more pouff at the comb you get. then i cut the shape. it is a very rounded rectangular shape, not quite a circle. i hand sewed the lace onto the edge, then went back to tack on the corners and points at the top of each lace scallop.
Wow, very nice work. I am also planning to make my own veil, do you know where I can find the lace applique similar to the one you used? Online probably since I live in Montreal, Canada
your welcome! i believe that it also comes in white. i sewed the scalloped part of it right on the edge of the tulle so i didn't need to go back and cut out tiny pieces that showed through
This is really pretty! Veils are so expensive and I really love yours. I'm thinking I'm going to be making my veil as well, and I'm definitely drawn to the mantilla style.
thank you so much. i love, love, love it. it turned out better than i ever thought it would, and in the beginging of wedding planning, i was really against this style. once i modified the part that attaches to a comb rather than sitting on top of your head like a helmet, i fell in love with it :)
