NonFloral Altar/Aisle Decorations

posted 1 year ago in Altar decor

Mr. Paper and I were pretty much DIYers for our wedding. Especially when we got the quote from the florist. $$$! Surprised

So we ended up doing all the decor ourselves. We decided on non-floral items, since it was cheap and easy to set up. The only thing we had a rough time figuring out was what exactly to have. We initially thought about using tall vases and putting flowers or dryed branches but it ended up being costly (vases cost at least 40 per) .. so in the end we went for a pop of color, huge bright orange balloons.

The only thing I didn't like was that they didn't place the balloons properly (2 on each side) and someone had instead put 1 balloon in the middle and the priest ended up looking like he had a balloon growing out of his head. OOPS! Laughing

But here's what we ended up using:

  • Aisle decor: 10 inch blue paper lanterns (ordered online)
  • > 2 ft strips of orange ribbon
  • Seats: Sandalwood and orange paper fans (alternate between seats)
  • Altar decor: 4 3ft orange balloons (circle not oval) (we had to order these online as they didn't have them in the party store)
  • Mini bubbles for guests
  • Programs we printed ourselves (plain white notecards from Target) with blue/orange accents.

And if you were curious about the color combos for the wedding party, we didn't want the party to exactly wear the same color, so we compromised. The girls wore a darker royal blue with light blue necklaces and the guys wore the light blue...NonFloral Altar/Aisle Decorations : wedding lantern fan aisle altar decoration paper decor blue orange inspiration diy invitations GirlsNonFloral Altar/Aisle Decorations : wedding lantern fan aisle altar decoration paper decor blue orange inspiration diy invitations Grooms

What an awesome idea. It looked beautiful. I'm not a fan of flowers at all, so something like this, in my colors, sans the balloon over the preist's head, lol would work. Thanks for the idea! and congrats on your wedding!!!

we are doing this too! I'm so glad to see this done inside - all of the pictures I saw had the lanterns inside. Do you have more pictures to share? What did you do for centerpieces? I think we are going to carry the lanterns all the way through like this - http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs075.snc4/35109_833032499058_2728241_46936124_7135528_n.jpg

Our centerpieces ended up being orange daisies (to go with the blue/orange theme) in a clear cylinder vase with large blue and smaller orange ribbon in the middle. For each table we did different cities we've visited together, and also a little blurb of the type of food we ate there (we're kinda foodies Tongue out ). We bought our flowers wholesale online, so since my bouquet were daisies as well, it was more cost effective to buy the same flowers and use them for the table).

The main thing I regret is that I wish we had a lower vase, I think ours was a bit too tall for the table. and I wish our designs were a bit more cohesive (i.e. our altar decor was simple and modern but our table decor was a bit of a mish-mash). In the end, I think we rushed it a bit.

This was our headtable centerpiece. My sister in law made this for us, it's a bit too traditional for us, but it was really really nice of her to make it for us:

Our table centerpieces consisted of:

  • 10-15 Daisies (orange with a bit of pink)
  • 1 clear vase with a blue ribbon tied in the middle and smaller orange ribbon in the middle
  • 1 Table Number - we printed them out on plain cardstock and bought decorative paper which I glued behind it for the border, we put a city on it too to make it more interesting. It was tied to one of the stem of the flowers
  • 1 wind up toy, the crab in the pic (for the kids Laughing)
  • 1 orange printed dreamcatcher
  • 1 card and sleeve of our fav foods from that city

The favors were gold and blue take-out boxes (we bought bulk online, they didn't have orange - boo! Frown and filled inside were:

  • 2 fortune cookies - 1 orange and 1 blueberry flavored/colored with custom fortunes
  • 2 lindt chocolate - hazelnut and milk chocolate which were in blue & orange wrappers
  • 2 bags of tea from tea company

The candles were provided by the restaurant.

How long were the ribbons that you used for the lanterns?  I wanted to incorporate lanterns into my wedding as much as possible and I absolutely LOVE this idea.

the ribbons were pretty long. I want to say we cut about 2 feet per (it's safer to have it too long instead of too short).

Thank You for posting this! I have been thinking about using the lanterns for the sides of the chairs, but scared I would order some that were too big. These look great!
