Hi eggman9091! These are soooo cute!!! You made them very well.. they're so neat.. very proffesional looking! How large are they & about how much ribbon do you think you used for each? Also, how many different styles of ribbon did you use?
ChiPrincess14: thanks for the compliment. I just took a ruler to the balls, I think they are 6" in diameter. I don't have any idea of how much ribbon I used on each one. I bought a lot of ribbon! If I had to take a guess I would say about 30 yds. (I was looking at this site Brown Paper Packages, and she says she used 20 yds, so I figure the 30 I was thinking about is pretty close to accurate.) I can tell you for sure that I used 6 styles of ribbon. I found that transparent ribbon showed the inside of the ugly styrofoam ball too much, so I wouls stick to solids. Different widths of ribbon worked well together. If you end up doing this project I would love to see pictures.
They look great! They really add a lot to your beautiful cake! It brings color without adding colors to the cake! We have an all white cake too...I am loving this idea! How long do you think it took you to make? What did you mount them to? I only have 5 weeks left..so I have to pick and choose my last minute DIY projects! But love this
@ yelhsa439: Thank you! As far as the time it take to put these together, doing all the labor youself I would say about 5-6 hours a topiary. But, if someone else cuts the ribbon into 4 inch strips for you ahead of time (or even while you are waiting at a doctor's office) that should save some time off of the total project.)
They way they are mounted, starting from the bottom: I used a vase, inside I put floral foam, hot glued one end of the painted dowel into the foam. I measured the opening of the vase and cut out a piece of paper to match, I cut a hole in the middle of the paper to stick over the dowel (and voila, it hid all the uglyiness of the floral foam.) I used easter grass to spruce up the top of the vase. I didn't hot glue to topiary to the stick, because I wanted it to be easy to transport to the venue. The topiaries alreadly had dowel sized holes made in them (which I stuck pencils in for the car ride to the venue), so when my mother was setting them up she did not have to search for the hole in the sytrofoam.
Good luck with your wedding! Only 5 weeks, that is exciting!
Created these to go around the cake. Instructions can be found here: Ribbon Topiaries. I just love the way they turned out!
