I used a combo of paper that was leftover from my other DIY projects and the special watercolor paper. Honesty, doesn't really change the outcome unless you use a lot of water when watercoloring. I took wet on wet as two different layers of paint as in paint something, let dry paint another design and let dry then fold away. came out fine.
