FI and I have been making our own wine for a couple of years, and decided to do that for our wedding favors. We made a Cabernet Sauvignon. You can buy wine "juice" at your local home brewing supply company, and get all the supplies necessary there, as well. Directions are the "juice" box, but definitely take advantage of the knowledge of the staff at the store. At our store, they're absolute geniuses!
We bottled the wine into 187ml bottles. I designed the labels in MS Word. The front labels are about 2x3" - I had to play with the size a little to get it right for the small bottles. The back labels are, I think, 1.5x2" or so. Since actual label templates don't exist in those sizes, we had to print them on full-sheet label paper and then cut them. We saved the files as PDF, and took our disc to Kinkos. For only $28, we got 32 pages of labels printed. Way cheaper than printing them at home and having to replace our printer ink at least once! Anyway, we used the paper cutter at Kinkos to cut them, then brought them home and started sticking!
We had gotten the ribbon at Michael's for $3 per spool (we needed 8 spools total). I had tried to tie them as bows, but they looked ridiculous, so I handed it over to FI to try out. After playing with it for a bit, he came up with the idea to tie it like a men's necktie! I mean, it IS a wedding, right?! He had to teach me how to do it, but now, I'm pretty much a pro at tying ties!
@Miss Sweet Tea and tarahartman - We bought the bottles at our local brewing supply store. We ordered 7 cases of them. We also bought the caps and the capper there. All told, with the bottles, the boxes of wine, the caps, the capper, and the labels, I think the total came to around $310 - about $1.80 per guest (we made a bottle for each person on our guest list, not just for those who we think will show up - extras will go to our vendors or WP).
Also, a few people had asked for a tutorial on the labels. I'm attaching examples of the labels that we used. You can play with them (on Word) to customize them for your needs.

posted by tarahartman 1 year agoThis is great! Oddly, we did the exact same thing. Made our own wine (Cab ice wine), then bottled them in the same size bottles :)
